New Mexico educators are currently enrolled in AIM's Pathways to Proficient Reading: Secondary course as an early training opportunity through the Literacy and Humanities Bureau. This comprehensive, 55-hour course is designed for middle and high school educators who are committed to learning about the connection between reading research, theoretical models such as the Simple View of Reading and Scarborough’s Reading Rope, and the best practices for language and literacy instruction in the classroom. Participants are learning effective instructional practices that will benefit all students, including linguistically diverse populations and those with language-based learning disabilities.

From the New Mexico Public Education Department's Literacy and Humanities Bureau:

"Beginning in the 2025-26 school year, in accordance with §22-13-1.3 NMSA 1978, all grades 6–12 English language arts (ELA), English language development (ELD), and special education (SPED) teachers will be required to complete AIM Pathways to Proficient Reading: Secondary (PPR:S). This requirement will follow a phased approach, like the rollout of LETRS for K–5 teachers. Below is an outline of the phased approach:

• 2025-26 school year: All grade 6 ELA, ELD, and SPED teachers will begin training.
• 2026-27 school year: All grades 7 and 8 ELA, ELD, and SPED teachers will begin training (any new grade 6 required positions will also begin training).
• 2027-28 school year: All grades 9 and 10 ELA, ELD, and SPED teachers will begin training (any new grades 6–8 required positions will also begin training).
• 2028-29 school year: All grades 11 and 12 ELA, ELD, and SPED teachers will begin training (any new grades 6–10 ELD, and SPED required positions will also begin training)."
