Overview of the Science of Reading

Maine Department of Education recommends all educators start their literacy learning path with this 9 hour module. The term “Science of Reading” refers to the research that cognitive scientists, literacy researchers, and expert practitioners have conducted on how individuals learn to read. This body of knowledge has been building for decades and has helped educators understand methods of reading instruction that are aligned to evidence-based practices.
The module uncovers: the importance of teacher knowledge, oral language, the connection between oral and written language, models of proficient reading, reading systems in the brain, understanding literacy development including phases of typical reading development, reading difficulties and tips for effective, evidence-based reading instruction.
