Teachable Moment

In this preview of her symposium presentation, Dr. Louisa Moats discusses with one of AIM’s students, what she considers the three most important things teachers need to know in order to be effective teachers of reading. The top three include knowledge of the psychology of reading, understanding of language structure and the ability to deliver skills instruction through meaningful instruction that motivates students.

Dr. Louisa Moats is a researcher, writer and consultant specializing in language, reading and spelling development and disorders. She is the author of many publications, including the LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) professional development program (Sopris Learning) and Speech to Print: Language Essentials for Teachers (Brooks Publishing). Dr. Moats led the International Dyslexia Association's development of the Knowledge and Practice Standards for Teachers of Reading. Her current work includes writing and overseeing implementation of LETRS professional development, and writing a hybrid instructional program for adolescents who are poor readers.
