Teachable Moment

Join one of our AIM students as she poses critical questions about the brain and reading to Dr. Ken Pugh. In a brief amount of time, Ken provides answers to questions regarding how the brain develops reading circuits, differences in those who struggle such as the dyslexic student and what experiences can affect the development of these brain pathways. Dr Pugh also addresses the need for professional and parents to be knowledgeable so that decisions are informed: he cautions that while we know a great deal; much remains to be learned.

Dr. Kenneth R. Pugh is the President and Director of Research at Haskins Laboratories, a Yale University and University of Connecticut affiliated inter-disciplinary institute, dedicated to the investigation of the biological bases of language. He also holds academic appointments as a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Connecticut, Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics at Yale University, and Associate Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology at Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Pugh also directs the Yale Reading Center. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for the International Dyslexia Association, a corresponding member of the Rodin Remediation Academy in Stockholm, and served for four years as a Member of the Language and Communications Study Section at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). His research program falls primarily in two broad domains: cognitive neuroscience and psycholinguistics.
