The term “Science of Reading” refers to the research that cognitive scientists, literacy researchers, and expert practitioners have conducted on how individuals learn to read. This body of knowledge has been building for decades and has helped educators understand methods of reading instruction that are aligned to evidence-based practices.

Phonological Awareness is a meta-cognitive skill defined as one’s ability to attend to, discriminate, remember, and manipulate the sound structures of language. Phonological awareness, most specifically phonemic awareness, is an essential skill that underlies a student’s ability to learn to read and spell.

The curated content, includes a simulated dyslexia experience and printable classroom tools, explains the origin of dyslexia, the key characteristics of the disability, and the necessary elements to support these individuals through interactive and multi-media learning experiences.

In this two-section Specialized Reading Knowledge: African American English course, participants will explore the unique linguistic features of African American English (AAE) and learn how to leverage these features to support students' literacy development. By recognizing and valuing AAE through a strengths-based approach, and bridging connections to academic English, educators can create a more inclusive and supportive approach to literacy instruction.

Please Note: AIM creates Specialized Reading Knowledge courses for individuals who already possess a strong foundational knowledge in Science of Reading and Structured Literacy, and are interested in expanding their instructional skills and knowledge. Prior comprehensive structured literacy training (such as Pathways to Proficient Reading) is strongly recommended before enrolling in these specialized learning opportunities.

This AIM Pathways module dives into the research legacy of Dr. Linnea Ehri’s Phases of Word Reading Development. The content of this module explains the developmental progression of foundational literacy skills, key milestones and behaviors within each phase, and the instructional focus that moves learners forward to the next phase of word reading and spelling.
