Overview of the Science of Reading - Module 1
The Maine Department of Education recommends that all educators start their literacy learning path with this 9 hour course. The term “Science of Reading” refers to the research that cognitive scientists, literacy researchers, and expert practitioners have conducted on how individuals learn to read. The module investigates: the importance of teacher knowledge, oral language and the connection between oral and written language, models of proficient reading, reading systems in the brain and understanding literacy development including phases of typical reading development, reading difficulties and tips for effective, evidence-based reading instruction.
